Abridged Index Medicus

The following announcement by the National Library of Medicine, about the new Abridged Index Medicus, is being published instead of a review of a sample copy of this new periodical. Editor.

“Abridged Index Medicus is a new monthly medical bibliography, published by the National Library of Medicine for the needs of the practicing physician. The first issue will appear in January 1970. Its select content and low cost will make it particularly desirable to the individual practitioner, and to the libraries of small hospitals and clinics that have hesitated to subscribe to more comprehensive and costly bibliographies. Abridged Index Medicus will provide an index to a large proportion of the journals to which such libraries subscribe.

Each issue will contain citations to articles in 100 English-language journals, representing one month's input into the National Library of Medicine's computerbased MEDLARS (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System). The selection of the journals was made by the Library with guidance from an advisory committee of physicians, medical editors, and medical librarians.
